Five decades ago, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China relocated to the current site along the banks of the Rideau River in Ottawa, Canada.
With a history of more than a century, the building of the Chinese Embassy in Canada harbors unique historical architecture and cultural heritage. In 1972, the Chinese government purchased the property as the official embassy premises. Over the past 50 years, it has witnessed the development of China-Canada relations, as well as changes and constancy.
Once a wood-frame house in 1862, it was built into a Gothic monastery in 1877. It was later reconstructed and renovated on several occasions before it finally became the premises of the Chinese Embassy in Canada. Five decades on, generations of Chinese diplomats have worked hard here, recording many beautiful moments in China-Canada relations, including warm receptions featuring traditional Chinese culture.
Despite the changes, what remains unchanged is the profound traditional friendship that China and Canada enjoy. During the Second World War, the two countries fought side by side against the Japanese fascist invasion of China. Canadian doctor Norman Bethune sacrificed his life to rescue Chinese soldiers, becoming an eternal symbol of friendship between the two peoples. On Oct. 13, 1970, diplomatic relations were established between China and Canada.
For over 50 years, the aspirations of their people to promote bilateral relations remain unchanged. The development of China-Canada relations has shown that a sound and stable bilateral relationship conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries.
Moreover, relations based on the basic principles of mutual respect and seeking common ground while reserving differences have remained the same. It is hoped that Canada will meet China halfway, uphold the above mentioned principles, and work with China to bring bilateral relations back on the right track, so as to shape a bright future for China-Canada relations.
The year 2023 marks the beginning of China's exciting new journey to build a modern socialist country in all respects. Through its development, China will create new opportunities for countries worldwide, including Canada.
